House of Yin
project
Sonali Sangeeta Balajee (lead)
In these hyper-heated, separating, and violent social and political times, an urgent call for balance compels us to draw down, slow down, rest, and focus on the expansiveness of our relationships in all forms. The House of Yin responds to this global call as a liberatory community-learning home, centering and valorizing Yin practices, structures, and ecological medicines, and those apothecaries across the world (reflective Yin practitioners) who embody them.
An embodied foundation in Taoism
Centering the Taoist Yin-Yang philosophy and practice is an important spiritual-through-the-political response to a hyper-Yang world, a world in which hyper-individualism, colonization, separation between matter and spirit, and separation from the Earth are rewarded. Having studied health, wholeness, and planetary wellbeing for several decades in various forms, Sonali began to see that we are in a global revolution, a grand rebalancing at a paradigm-level. Her personal healing over 20 years and counting with Chinese medicine specifically enabled her to see applicable wisdom for this rebalancing in the profound teachings of the Tao (the Way), and to those of the Yin-Yang model and reality.
SSoMA is a perfect dwelling for this, respectfully centering ancient wisdoms (grounded in the laws of nature) lovingly and fiercely applied to modern times. So many are being innately called to focus on slowing down, nurturing strategies, and elevating relations with the local and the ‘small,’ and rest. The House of Yin amplifies this innate global movement, and the innate call and capacity for greater balance that so many living organisms are feeling.
Our collective wellbeing requires a strong individual and collective rebalancing focus on the Yin, fortifying the relational, valorizing inner and intuitive strengthening, and deepening our capacity to receive. The Yin and Yang are both required for whole health and wellbeing. Individual and collective life move with both energies and life processes, which are in constant, dynamic communication and interaction with each other, and are both complimentary and opposite in nature to each other. Light and dark, warming and cooling, external and internal, being and doing… all moving in non-dualistic ways, grounded in the non-binary. However, the modern colonial project thrives on and requires a devalorizing of the Yin in all forms.
Introducing the House of Yin
Through life-time reflection and profound prayer, the House of Yin came through by vision to Sonali in 2021/22 as a necessary major focus of SSoMA. Alongside growing efforts worldwide, this liberatory community-learning home is honored to contribute to revitalizing and finding pleasure in Yin practices and structures, while and through counteracting the Hyper-Yang. Its name is inspired by collective care Sonali experienced firsthand in the form of some of the most loving, safe, and joyful spaces she had ever encountered, guided by queer leaders in HIV/AIDS prevention movements and hospice work, and ballroom and dance culture. Not to mention, many of her queer friends affectionately have been calling her ‘House Mother’ for years, a title she accepts and makes her smile. ‘House of’ is also used in several countries to indicate the claiming of special family names.
Spirit-into-form - House Rules
The House of Yin holds events for all, and especially for reflective and relationship-grounded practitioners who want to continue to learn and fortify the Yin. Here are a few rejuvenating things we’re up to in the House of Yin:
Studying and elevating plant medicines that calm the nervous system, stabilize and strengthen the heart in a myriad of ways, and bring ease
Initiating a Yin Ceremonial Council of spiritual-political activators who embody the qualities of the Yin (deep relationship in many forms, practiced internal inquiry and contemplation, intuitive, and more)
Carrying out a Sacred Arts Prayer Project grounded in healing the Doctrine of Discovery through arts-based prayer and nurturing Indigenous sovereignty and seed
Written / visual spiritual and poetic essays on the power and medicines of Yin, how to live aligned with healthy Yang, and how to counteract the Hyper-Yang
Growing and flowing resources to Yin-grounded strategies and practitioners
